In the title compound, C15H12N3+.CF3O3S-, one terminal pyridine ring of the terpyridinium cation is protonated and forms an intramolecular N-HN hydrogen bond of 2.646 (4) Å which stabilizes the cis, trans conformation in contrast to the trans, trans geometry of free terpyridine. An N-HO hydrogen bond of 2.817 (5) Å connects the terpyridinium cations and trifluoromethanesulfonate anions.
