In the title dinuclear complex, [Ho2(C8H7O3)6(C10H8N2)2(H2O)2]·H2O, each of the two independent HoIII ions is coordinated by eight O atoms from four 4-hy­droxy­phenyl­acetate (HPAA) ligands and a water mol­ecule, and one N atom from a 4,4′-bipyridine (bipy) ligand in a distorted tricapped trigonal–prismatic geometry. The HPAA ligands are coordinated in bis-chelate, bridging and bridging tridentate modes. In the crystal, O—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the mol­ecules into a three-dimensional network.

Comment top

The design and synthesis of carboxylic mental–organic complexes have been an increasing interest for decades owing to their potential practical applications, such as fluorescence, magnetism (Wang, et al., 2010; Fang, et al., 2006; Wang, et al., 2008). We have worked at it before (Liu, et al., 2010). Herein we report the crystal structure of a new holmium (III) complex with the ligand 4–hydroxyphenylacetate and 4,4'–bipyridine.

In the title dinuclear complex (I), the unique HoIII ion is coordinated by four HPAA ligands, a bipy ligand and a water molecule via eight O atoms and one N atom (see, Fig. 1). The HoIII ion is in a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic environment. The HPAA ligands coordinate in the bis–chelate, bridging and bridging tridentate modes.

Experimental top

All reagents and solvents used were of commercially available quality and without purified before using. p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid(HPAA) (0.456 g, 3 mmol)and sodium hydroxide (0.12 g, 3 mmol) were mixed together in water(10 ml), then Ho[(NO3)3](0.351 g, 1 mmol) dissolved in water(10 ml) was added into the above solution, after stirred for an hour, an ethanol(5 ml) solution of 4,4'-bipyridine(0.156 g, 1 mmol) is slowly dripped into the above solution with stirring for three hours. After filtration, the filtrate was allowed to stand at room temperature, and single crystals suitable for X–ray work were obtained after a week.

Refinement top

All H atoms attached to C atoms and O(hydroxyl) atom were fixed geometrically and treated as riding with C—H = 0.97 Å (methylene) or 0.93 Å (aromatic) and O—H = 0.82 Å with Uiso(H) = 1.2Ueq(C) or Uiso(H) = 1.5Ueq(O). H atoms of water molecule were located in a difference Fourier map and included in the subsequent refinement using restraints (O—H= 0.82 (1)Å and H···H= 1.39 (2) Å) with Uiso(H) = 1.5Ueq(O). In the last cycles of refinement they were treated as riding on their parent O atom.

Special details top

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell e.s.d.'s are taken into account individually in the estimation of e.s.d.'s in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between e.s.d.'s in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger.
