The structural results clearly indicate that 2-(2-thiazolylhydrazono)indan-1,3-dione, C12H7N3O2S, exists as a keto-hydrazone tautomer in the solid state. The indandione and thiazolylhydrazone groups are connected by a C=N bond and the H atom bonded to N1 refines with a normal temperature factor. The entire molecule is essentially planar. There is a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydrazone H atom and carbonyl O atom. The asymmetric unit contains two molecules which have a `local' screw relationship.
