The dichromium Pacman com­plex (tBudmx)Cr2Cl2·C4H10O (1) [(tBudmx)H2 is a di­­methyl­xanthene-bridged cofacial (bis­)dipyrrin, C49H58N4O] was synthesized by salt metathesis using anhydrous CrCl2 and previously reported (tBudmx)K2. Treat­ment of 1 with two equivalents of the reductant potassium graphite afforded K2(tBudmx)Cr2Cl2(thf)3·0.5C4H10O·0.5C4H8O (thf is tetra­hydro­furan, C4H8O) (2), with both potassium ions inter­calated between the pyrrolic subunits. Comparison of the solid-state structures for 1 and 2 reveals minimal changes in the primary coordination sphere of each Cr ion, with notable elongation of the dipyrrin C—C and C—N bonds upon reduction, consistent with com­putational support for a ligand-based reduction.

Special details top

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell e.s.d.'s are taken into account individually in the estimation of e.s.d.'s in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between e.s.d.'s in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. All structures were collected on a Bruker three-circle platform goniometer equipped with an Apex II CCD and an Oxford cryostream-cooling device fixed at 100 K. Radiation was from graphite-monochromated fine focus Mo Kα (λ = 0.71073 Å) sealed tube source.. Crystals did not show significant decay during the data collection. Data was collected as a series of φ and/or ω scans. Data integration down to 0.84 Å resolution was carried out using SAINT V8.37 A with reflection spot size optimization. Absorption corrections were made with the program SADABS. Space group assignments were determined by examination of systematic absences, E-statistics, and successive refinement of the structures. The structure was solved by the Intrinsic Phasing methods and refined by least squares methods again F2 using SHELXT-2014 (Sheldrick, 2015a) and SHELXL2014 (Sheldrick, 2015b) with the OLEX 2 (Dolomanov, et al., 2009) interface. The program PLATON (Spek, 2020) was employed to confirm the absence of higher symmetry space groups.

An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Disordered tetrahydrofuran was appropriately modeled.

All structures were collected on a Bruker three-circle platform goniometer equipped with an Apex II CCD and an Oxford cryostream-cooling device fixed at 100 K. Radiation was from graphite-monochromated fine focus Mo Kα (λ = 0.71073 Å) sealed tube source.. Crystals did not show significant decay during the data collection. Data was collected as a series of φ and/or ω scans. Data integration down to 0.84 Å resolution was carried out using SAINT V8.37 A with reflection spot size optimization. Absorption corrections were made with the program SADABS. Space group assignments were determined by examination of systematic absences, E-statistics, and successive refinement of the structures. The structure was solved by the Intrinsic Phasing methods and refined by least squares methods again F2 using SHELXT-2014 (Sheldrick, 2015a) and SHELXL2014 (Sheldrick, 2015b) with the OLEX 2 (Dolomanov, et al., 2009) interface. The program PLATON (Spek, 2003) was employed to confirm the absence of higher symmetry space groups.
