Cs3ZnI5 is isotypic with Cs3CoI5, (NH4)3ZnCl5 and Cs3HgCl5. The structure consists of distorted [ZnI4]2- tetrahedra and chains of face-sharing [Cs6I]5+ octahedra parallel to the x axis. The ninefold coordination around one Cs+ ion is best described as a quadratic antiprism with one of the basal faces centred. The other Cs+ ion is coordinated by eight I- ions in the form of a strongly truncated `bisdisphenoid'.
