The single-myosin-filament transform from lattice-sampled layer lines in the X-ray diffraction pattern from vertebrate striated muscle was deduced by the cylindrically averaged difference Patterson function.

In various muscles, the two heads of myosin together with part of its α-helical coiled coil make up the minimal unit that is regulated. Reported here, for the first time, is the growth of three-dimensional crystals of such a heavy meromyosin, purified from squid, and their X-ray diffraction to near-atomic resolution (up to ∼5 Å).

A custom wide-field lens and a new-generation megapixel camera enabled micro-CT scanning over a 3.5 mm × 5 mm field of view at 1 µm resolution/0.5 µm pixel size at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Advanced Light Source and Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source using a phantom with micron-scale features. This novel combination of resolution and field of view was designed for broad applicability to any setting in which micron-scale structures need to be characterized comprehensively in three dimensions over mm to cm.

The first characterization of the three-dimensional microstructure in rabbit patella–patellar tendon interface using propagation phase-contrast synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography is presented.

The rat suture middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) is a frequently used animal model for investigating the mechanisms of ischemic brain injury. During suture MCAO, transection of the external carotid artery (ECA) potentially restrains blood flow and impairs masticatory muscle and other ECA-supported territories, consequently influencing post-operation animal survival. This study investigates the effect of ECA transection on the hemodynamic alterations using a novel synchrotron radiation angiography technique and magnetic resonance imaging.

A fast and robust reconstruction algorithm for small-angle scattering tensor tomography, named iterative reconstruction tensor tomography, is presented. It employs a second-rank tensor model and an iterative error backpropagation to simplify and accelerate tensor tomography reconstruction.
