The Lorentz factor for the integrated intensity of time-of-flight neutron scattering is discussed in detail, including that for Bragg diffraction and total scattering. It is shown that normalization using a vanadium measurement does not, in practice, influence the existence of the Lorentz factor.

This paper demonstrates an event-mode imaging based neutron diffraction detector system that employs a scintillator screen, an image intensifier and a Timepix3-based camera. This highly configurable approach allows for large-solid-angle low-cost neutron diffraction setups with a performance comparable to that of the 3He detectors on a time-of-flight neutron diffraction beamline.

The texture measurement capabilities of the NOMAD beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source and the NRSF2 beamline at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are discussed. Texture analyses using two common analysis methods, Rietveld texture analysis using the MAUD program and pole figure inversion using the MTEX MATLAB toolbox, are presented.

In neutron scattering experiments, data sets with different statistical significance are collected. A new method is presented to efficiently calculate the weights of single-crystal time-of-flight measurements, and to add together the various contributions.

The performance of the Spatz neutron reflectometer is demonstrated. It has a variable wavelength resolution to suit experimental needs for reflectometry at air–solid and solid–liquid interfaces.

The applicability of time-of-flight spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering to the study of the inner fractal structure of the nuclei of biological cells is demonstrated. The method is used to show the logarithmic fractal structure of the large-scale organization of chromatin in rat lymphocyte nuclei.

The geometry of hydrogen bonds in raffinose pentahydrate and dehydrated tetrahydrate single crystals was studied by time-of-flight neutron diffraction. The rearrangement of water molecules and the decrease in lattice constant c during dehydration were demonstrated.

A method for verifying that coordinate systems are conserved while performing texture analysis using MAUD is demonstrated for neutron diffraction data of a quartz single crystal.

A new mobile sample-delivery system dedicated to in-flight studies of pristine aerosols and unsupported nanoparticles using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden, is presented. The aerosol sample-delivery system brings an aerosol from atmospheric pressure to the experimental chamber in a continuous flow, and the design, operation and commissioning results of the system are presented.
