3D electron diffraction (3DED) was used to elucidate the structure of a new ninth polymorph of indomethacin from an amorphous solid dispersion, which are product formulations used to improve the dissolution performance of active pharmaceutical ingredients with poor aqueous solubility. Insights from the structure solution allowed for a simpler crystallization route for this polymorph to be deduced, demonstrating the relevance of 3DED within drug development.

Analysis of density fluctuations in condensed matter through the structure factors is a fundamental issue in statistical mechanics relevant to a characterization of disorder and uniformity. A new semi-analytic formula is proposed for the static structure factor of solids at finite temperatures by taking into account multiphonon diffuse scattering up to infinite order. The formula is applicable to the entire wavenumber range and computationally more efficient than other theoretical models.

The morphological origins of polarization-dependent anisotropic X-ray scattering have been investigated through simulations and experiment. Interfacial and bulk molecular orientation–composition correlations are found to produce scattering anisotropy from globally isotropic films. The connection between anisotropic signals and underlying morphology is explored.

The growth of Pb droplets in a lead borate glass was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and in situ small-angle X-ray scattering during isothermal annealing within the 649–679 K temperature range. At advanced stages of the process, the dependences on time of the average radius, number density and total volume of Pb droplets are in good agreement with the predictions of the theoretical LSW model proposed by Lifshitz–Slyosov–Wagner for the classical coarsening mechanism.
