An experimental set-up is presented which combines simultaneous optical and X-ray scattering measurements with a short-term shearing apparatus for studying polymer flow-induced crystallization. Optical measurements provide sufficient sensitivity to detect the formation of oriented precursors during flow, while their impact on morphology development after flow cessation can be quantified with X-ray scattering.

The design of a new cell for in situ and operando X-ray absorption experiments is reported. The cell is successfully tested for in situ characterization of cobalt silica-supported Fischer-Tropsch catalysts and operando studies of methanol oxidation over molybdenum catalysts.

Time-resolved in situ small angle X-ray scattering measurements were carried out to monitor the formation of nanoparticles of cadmium sulfide, from a solution containing the corresponding acetate and thioacetamide under solvothermal conditions. Analysis of the SAXS data shows that spherical cadmium sulfide particles of ca 105 Å in radius form within the first minutes of the reaction and then grow uniformly to form cylindrical nanoclusters over a period of a few hours, resulting in a highly monodispersed particles distribution.

A new virtual special issue highlights some of the most exciting work presented at the 18th International Small Angle Scattering Conference (SAS2022), which took place in Campinas, Brazil. The articles included here were originally published in recent regular issues of Journal of Applied Crystallography and Acta Crystallographica Section D. The SAS2022 special issue is available at http://journals.iucr.org/special_issues/2023/sas2022/.
