The hydrothermal reaction of ethylenediamine with CoCl2·6H2O yielded tris(ethylenediamine-κ2N,N′)cobalt(III) chloride diiodide monohydrate, [Co(C2H8N2)3](Cl)(I)2·H2O, which consists of [Co(en)3]3+ cations, Cl− and I− anions, and solvent water molecules. The Cl− anions bridge the [Co(en)3]3+ complexes to form two-dimensional honeycomb-like layers through N—HCl hydrogen bonds, which stack along the c direction to form channels hosting I− ions and water molecules.
