In the commercially available title compound, C6H12O12·2H2O, the dodecahydroxycyclohexane molecule has an inversion center. The crystal packing is characterized by a strong O—H
O hydrogen bond involving the water molecules, and the dodecahydroxycyclohexane molecules are additionally linked by O—HO hydrogen bonds of the hydroxyl groups, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional network.
