Urea doping leads to the enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency in tristhioureazinc(II) sulfate (ZTS) single crystals, with a critical dependence on urea concentration. An interesting correlation between crystalline perfection and SHG efficiency has been revealed using high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and Kurtz powder techniques.

Significant improvement of crystalline perfection in L-asparagine monohydrate single crystals was achieved by annealing. As a result of the improvement in crystalline perfection, remarkable enhancement in second harmonic generation efficiency, optical transparency, fluorescence intensity and dielectric properties was observed.

A large and unidirectional single crystal of L-cysteine hydrochloride monohydrate has been grown for the first time by the recently invented Sankaranarayanan–Ramasamy method. This crystal was found to possess good nonlinear optical properties, which, along with other optical and dielectric properties, revealed that the title compound is a good candidate for photonic applications.

Certain interesting growth features of point defects, which commonly occur in single crystals but are difficult to observe directly, such as their origin, clustering and dynamics, have been demonstrated in a potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal grown at an intentionally fast growth rate by the temperature-lowering method.
