The title compound, {[Mg(C₂H₅NO₂)(H₂O)₄](NO₃)₂}_n, contains cis-MgO₂(H₂O)₄ octa­hedra, which are connected by the glycine mol­ecules to form helical chains. It is isostructural with its cobalt and nickel analogues.

The title compound, {[Ni(C₂H₅NO₂)(H₂O)₄](NO₃)₂}_n, contains cis-NiO₂(H₂O)₄ octa­hedra linked by the glycine mol­ecules into helical chains. Its structural relationship to other glycine metal nitrates is discussed.
