In the title compound, [Sm(C7H5O2)3(C12H8N2)], the SmIII cation is coordinated by six O atoms from three bidentate 2-formylphenolate ligands and by two N atoms from 1,10-phenanthroline ligand. The resulting SmN2O6 coordination polyhedron is a distorted square antiprism. In the crystal, C—HO interactions connect molecules into chains along the b-axis direction. In addition, π–π stacking interactions are observed with centroid–centroid distances in the range 3.6422 (13)–3.7329 (13) Å.

In the title compound, C20H19N3O4S, a novel tubulin ligand active against human cancer, the dihedral angle between the pyridine ring and the carbazole ring system is 42.87 (10)°. In the crystal, the molecules are held together by N—HO and C—HO hydrogen bonds into layers, which are assembled into a three-dimensional network via π–π stacking interactions between inversion-related pyridine rings, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.5101 (12) Å.
