In the title compound, C16H16N4O3·CH3OH, the aromatic rings form a dihedral angle of 0.4 (2)°. The nitro group is twisted from the attached benzene ring by 7.5 (2)°. In the crystal, N—HO and O—HO hydrogen bonds link alternating hydrazone and methanol molecules into chains in [100]. The crystal packing exhibits π–π interactions between aromatic rings from neighbouring chains [centroid–centroid distances = 3.734 (3) and 3.903 (3) Å].

The title compound, C12H8Cl2N4O, was synthesized by the reaction of 5-amino-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonitrile and 2-chloroacetyl chloride. The dihedral angle between the pyrazole and benzene rings is 30.7 (3)°. In the crystal structure, strong N—HO hydrogen bonds link the molecules into chains along [001]. C—HN hydrogen bonds are also present.
