The title compound, C10H8ClN5O, was synthesized by the reaction of 3-hydrazino-1H-1,2,4-triazole with 2-chloro­benz­aldehyde in ethanol. The mol­ecule is nearly planar. In the crystal structure, screw-related mol­ecules form N—H...O and N—H...N hydrogen bonded chains along the b axis.

The mol­ecule is almost planar and in the crystal structure screw-related mol­ecules are linked by N—H...O and N—H...N hydrogen bonds to form chains along the b axis. The chains are interlinked by the water mol­ecules via O—H...N hydrogen bonds.

The mol­ecule is non-planar and the dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings is 32.76 (7)°. O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the glide-related mol­ecules into a chain along [101].
