Treatment of tetra­ethyl­ammonium hexa­carbonyl­tantalate, [Et4N][Ta(CO)6], with 1.1 equivalents of mol­ecular iodine (I2) in tetra­hydro­furan (THF) at 200 K, followed by the addition of 6.0 equivalents of 2,6-diiso­propyl­phenyl isocyanide (CNDipp) and slow warming to 293 K over a 24 h period gave the tantalum(I) iodide derivative hexa­kis­(2,6-diiso­propyl­phenyl isocyanide-κC)iodido­tan­ta­lum(I), [TaI(C13H17N)6] or TaI(CNDipp)6, 1. Recrystallization of this substance from pentane provided deep-red nearly black parallelepipeds of the product, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Addition of 1 in THF at 200 K to a suspension of an excess (5.8 equivalents) of caesium graphite (CsC8), followed by warming, filtration, and solvent removal, afforded a dark-green oily solid of unknown composition, from which several red–brown rhombohedral plates of the ditantalum salt hepta­kis­(2,6-diiso­propyl­phenyl isocyanide-κC)tantalum hexa­kis­(2,6-diiso­propyl­phenyl isocyanide-κC)tantalate, [Ta(C13H17N)7][Ta(C13H17N)6] or [Ta(CNDipp)7][Ta(CNDipp)6], 2, were har­vested. Salt 2 is a unique substance, as it is the only known example of a salt containing a homoleptic cation, [MLx]+, and a homoleptic anion, [MLy], with the same transition metal and π-acceptor ligand L. In solution, 2 undergoes full com­pro­portionation to afford the recently reported 17-electron paramagnetic zero­valent tantalum complex Ta(CNDipp)6, the only known isolable TaL6 complex of Ta0.

Special details top

Geometry. All esds (except the esd in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account individually in the estimation of esds in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between esds in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell esds is used for estimating esds involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Reflection contributions from highly disordered solvent located in pockets were fixed and added to the calculated structure factors using the SQUEEZE routine of program Platon (Spek, 2015), which determined there to be 102 electrons in 490 Å3 treated this way per unit cell. The material had been in contact with both n-pentane and n-heptane, so the pocket may have contained one or the other or a mixture (the electron count suggests just heptane). No satisfactory solvent model was achieved. Because the exact identity and amount of solvent were unknown, no solvent was included in the atom list or molecular formula. Thus all calculated quantities that derive from the molecular formula (e.g., F(000), density, molecular weight, etc.) are known to be incorrect.

Several isopropyl groups of the anion are modeled as disordered over two positions each: C102-C104, 0.542 (6):0.458 (6), C128-C130, 0.568 (5):0.432 (5), C138-C140, 0.621 (5):0.379 (5), C151-C153, 0.821 (4):0.179 (4), C167-C169, 0.630 (9):0.370 (9).

For each disordered isopropyl group, analogous bond lengths and angles between the two positions were restrained to be similar. Anisotropic displacement parameters for proximal atoms were restrained to be similar and/or constrained to be equivalent. The disorder models for many of the isopropyl groups are approximations for the true extent of the disorder, as the central carbon atom of each group should be in the plane (or nearly so) of the bonded phenyl ring. However, the extension of such disorder models into the phenyl rings did not significantly improve the structure, plus the resulting two positions of each phenyl ring carbon atom were not based on distinct electron density found in the difference Fourier map due to resolution limitations.
