The title compound, C29H20ClNOS, is a 1-substituted-3-phenyl­isoquinoline that crystallizes with four independent mol­ecules in the asymmtric unit. The four mol­ecules have similar C—S—C angles. The most noteworthy differences between the mol­ecules relate to the inclination of the 3-phenyl subsituent with respect to the isoquinoline fused-ring [dihedral angles of 21.2 (1), 25.6 (2), 34.3 (1) and 36.5 (2)°].

Experimental top

1-Mercapto-3-phenylisoquinoline (10.0 mmol) and 2-bromo-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-phenylethanone (10.5 mmol) were heated in ethanol (50 ml) under a nitrogen atmosphere for 2 h. The solid product was collected and dissolved in chloroform. The chloroform solution was washed with water and dried; the dry solution was concentrated. The solid material was purified by recrystallization from ether.

Refinement top

Carbon-bound H-atoms were placed in calculated positions (C–H 0.93–0.98 Å) and were included in the refinement in the riding model approximation with Uiso(H) set to 1.2Ueq(C).
