In the title compound, [Zn(C30H26N4O)2](C6H2N3O7)2·2C3H7NO, the ZnII ion is coordinated in a distorted octa­hedral environment involving four equatorial N atoms and two O atoms in axial sites. The dihedral angles between the benzimidazole ring system and the phenyl rings in each of the benzyl­benzimidazole units are 78.56 (12), 81.68 (11), 75.76 (10) and 85.78 (9)°. In the crystal structure, there are weak but significant inter­molecular ππ stacking inter­actions with centroid–centroid distances of 3.685 (1) and 3.978 (1) Å.

Comment top

For background information see Wu et al. (2009). The asymmetric unit of the title compound consists of a discrete di[1,3-bis(1-benzylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxapropane] zinc(II) cation (Fig.1), two picrate anions and two molecules of dimethylformamide. The ZnII ion is six-coordinated with a N4O2 ligand set. The bobb (1,3-bis(1-benzylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxapropane) ligand acts as a tridentate donor. The coordination geometry of the ZnII ion is distorted octahedral. This geometry is assumed by the ZnII ion presumably to relieve steric crowding. In the crystal structure there are weak but significant intermolecular ππ stacking interactions with centroid to centroid distances of 3.685 (1) and 3.978 (1)Å (Fig. 2).

Experimental top

To a stirred solution of 1,3-bis(1-benzylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxapropane (0.183 g, 0.4 mmol) in hot MeOH (15 ml) was added Zn(C6H2N3O7)2 (0.104 g, 0.2 mmol) in MeOH (5 ml). A yellow crystalline product formed rapidly. The precipitate was filtered off, washed with MeOH and absolute Et2O, and dried in vacuo. The dried precipitate was dissolved in DMF resulting in a yellow solution. Yellow crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies were obtained by ether diffusion into a DMF solution of the title compound after three days at room temperature. Yield, 0.191 g (70%). (found: C, 59.20; H, 4.41; N,14.18. Calcd. for C78 H70 N16 Zn O18: C, 59.11; H, 4.45; N, 14.14)

Refinement top

All H atoms were found in difference Fourier maps and were subsequently refined in a riding-model approximation with fixed C—H distances ranging from 0.95 to 0.99Å and Uiso(H) = 1.2 Ueq or Uiso(H) = 1.5Ueq of the carrier atom, respectively.

Special details top

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell e.s.d.'s are taken into account individually in the estimation of e.s.d.'s in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between e.s.d.'s in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger.
