The asymmetric unit of the title crystal structure, C24H36O4, contains two independent mol­ecules, differing only in their side-chain conformations and linked though O—H...O hydrogen bonds by carboxyl pairing [O...O = 2.6715 (17) and 2.6544 (17) Å; O—H...O = 170 and 179°]. Six inter­molecular C—H...O=C close contacts were found.

(Alert level A) and resolution (too) Low [sin\q/\l < 0.6] (Alert level C): this problem has arisen because initially we were told by the manufacturer of our newly installed Bruker Smart Apex II unit to collect our small-molecule data to 0.85\%A resolution (with copper K\a radiation). This yields a \q max. of ca. 62.55\%, less than the 67\% required by Acta. However, since the crystals of this compound are no longer available (or are of such small size as to preclude collecting a new data set), we can only rely on the current data set.

Experimental. crystal mounted on cryoloop using Paratone-N

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell e.s.d.'s are taken into account individually in the estimation of e.s.d.'s in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between e.s.d.'s in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger.
