Intra­molecular charge transfers between π-conjugated mol­ecules and polyoxometalate (POM) clusters have been observed in donor–acceptor systems based on organic donors and inorganic POM acceptors, which unfortunately results in a general quenching of the chromophore luminescence. The development of POM–chromophore dyads that are capable of tackling the quenching process and enhancing the fluorescence intensity of such systems remains a highly challenging area of study. A family of organic–inorganic polyoxometalate hybrids, {[(n-C4H9)4N]3[(MnMo6O24){(CH2)3CR}2]} [1, R = –NHCH2C14H9, namely (anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino; 2, R = –NHCH2C13H9, (9H-fluoren-2-ylmethyl)amino; 3, R = –NHCH2C10H7, (naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)amino; 4, R = –NHCH2C16H9, (pyren-2-ylmethyl)amino], were synthesized by covalently tethering π-conjugated mol­ecules onto an Anderson cluster. The resulting POM–chromophore dyads were fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and ESI–MS. The fluorescence features of these dyads were studied in detail to verify a dramatic emission enhancement that can be achieved by fine-tuning the microenvironment in solution and suppressing the intrinsic photo-induced electron-transfer process.

Special details top

Geometry. All esds (except the esd in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account individually in the estimation of esds in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between esds in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell esds is used for estimating esds involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > 2σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger.

The inorganic part of the the aninon is disorederd around the site Mn centre with the occupancies ratio of around 0.71/0.29 for all the Mo centres, O ligands and the C atoms which linked O atoms. The organic part of the cluster is well located. The C4, N5, C6 and C7 of the anoin were restrained by DFIX command at 1.3 and 0.05. The C6, C7, C8, C9,C13,C14,C15,C16,C1,O8, C17 and C19 were restrained by SIMU and DELU command at 0.02. The C22 were restrained by simu command at 0.01. The atoms in the TBA cations were also restrained SIMU and DELU command at 0.02, and C33 C34 C22 C23 C29 C30 were restrained by DFIX command at 1.3 and 0.05. The solvent ether were disordered and only some fragment were identified.

Special details top

Geometry. All esds (except the esd in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account individually in the estimation of esds in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between esds in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell esds is used for estimating esds involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. The solvent ether molecule was disordered and this disorder results in site occupancies of 0.5 being assigned to all the atoms which also were restrained by DFIX command at 1.40 and 0.01. The C27, C28, C43, C44 of TBA cations were restrained by SIMU and DELU command at 0.02.

Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > 2σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger.
