In the coordination chemistry of palladium, dimers bridged via halides are a common motif. Higher oligomers, however, are still rare. We report the structure of an alternating eight-membered [Pd4Br4]4− ring framed by cyclo­hepta­trienide ligands, which was ob­tained by cocrystallization of dimers and tetra­mers of the complex salt brom­ido­{η3-[3-(2,6-diiso­propyl­phen­yl)imidazolium-1-yl]cyclo­hepta­trienido}palladium(II) tetra­fluoro­borate, namely bis[di-μ-bromido-bis­({η3-[3-(2,6-diiso­propyl­phen­yl)imid­azolium-1-yl]cyclo­hepta­trienido}palladium(II))] cyclo-tetra-μ-bromido-tetra­kis({η3-[3-(2,6-diiso­propyl­phen­yl)imidazolium-1-yl]cyclo­hepta­trienido}palladium(II)) octakis(tetra­fluoro­borate) di­chloro­methane octa­solvate, [Pd4Br4(C22H26N2)4][Pd2Br2(C22H26N2)2]2(BF4)8·8CH2Cl2. These dimers and tetra­mers form a highly dynamic equilibrium in solution which was studied by low-temperature NMR spectroscopy. In the light of the presented results, tetra­meric PdII species can be assumed to co-exist as a second species in many cases where by current knowledge only a dimeric compound would be expected.

Special details top

Experimental. Diffractometer operator C. Jandl scanspeed 20 s per frame dx 40 mm 2666 frames measured in 7 data sets phi-scans with delta_phi = 0.5 omega-scans with delta_omega = 0.5

Geometry. Bond distances, angles etc. have been calculated using the rounded fractional coordinates. All su's are estimated from the variances of the (full) variance-covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account in the estimation of distances, angles and torsion angles

Refinement. Refinement on F2 for ALL reflections except those flagged by the user for potential systematic errors. Weighted R-factors wR and all goodnesses of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The observed criterion of F2 > 2sigma(F2) is used only for calculating -R-factor-obs etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R-factors based on ALL data will be even larger.

Solution and refinements were carried out with the programs APEXII (Bruker, 2013) and SHELXL2014 (Sheldrick, 2008) in conjunction with SHELXLE (Huebschle et al., 2011). The space group assignment was based on systematic absences, E statistics and successful refinement of the structure.
