The propagation modes of ultra-acoustic waves in quartz planar resonators with different elliptical electrodes have been studied by means of white-beam X-ray topographs. The contrast is explained on the basis of thickness vibration modes and the validity and limits of this model are verified by means of simulation of the X-ray images. The shape of the fringes is correct but other features are not observed in the simulations. The differences may be explained by the interaction with the wires connecting the electrodes to the frequency generator and a slight angle between the upper and lower surfaces not taken into consideration in the theory.
