Dicopper(II) dilanthanum pentaoxide, La2Cu2O5, has been prepared using a high-pressure technique. Its structure at 296 and 10 K was analyzed by Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. The structure of La2Cu2O5 comprises CuO5 square pyramids connected to each other three dimensionally by corner sharing and ten-coordinate La3+ ions occupying positions next to oxygen vacancies which form tunnels along the c axis.
