The First Cadmium Rare Earth Borates CdLn[B₅O₁₀] with Ln = La, Sm, Eu

Single crystals of the new compounds CdLn[B₅O₁₀] (Ln = La³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺) were obtained in a silver ampoule at 1073 K by using a B₂O₃ flux technique. The compounds are isotypic with CoSm[B₅O₁₀] and contain two-dimensional infinite [B₅O₁₀]^5- ion chains. Three of five boron sites are tetrahedrally coordinated. Cd²⁺ occupies distorted CdO₆ polyhedra while Ln³⁺ is tenfold coordinated by O atoms.
