Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and electron microscopy (EM) are compared for effectiveness in determining structural features at the above-molecular level in cellulose. The uniformity of elementary fibrils suggested by SAXS is confirmed by EM. The SAXS pattern is shown via EM to arise from the fibrils rather than the interstices.
