An X-ray goniometer has been constructed which enables the orientation of large single crystals to be adjusted relative to a reference plane of the crystal holder. This plane can be the conditioning ring of a typical crystal polishing jig. The orientation can be carried out to within 5′′ of arc in a time of four or five minutes. Most patterns of standard crystal polishing and sawing jigs can be accommodated, and the method is applicable to any material for which a suitable Bragg reflection, with θ between 10 and 80°, can be found.
