A simple technique for determining the absolute atomic configuration of large polar crystals is described, based on a comparison of the intensities of Friedel pairs of reflections, measured in transmission, on either side of the absorption edge for a constituent atom. The technique is particularly applicable to crystals of lamellar habit with a polar axis lying close to the plane of the plate.
