The symmetry of the structure of the as-quenched ω phase, which is formed during the decomposition of b.c.c. (β) solid solutions in Zr and Ti-base alloys, was shown to change from sixfold to threefold with increasing solute content. These observations indicate that as the undercooling beneath the Ms curve for the β →ω transformation decreases, the magnitude of the displacement of the atoms away from their b.c.c. positions during the transformation also decreases.
