The title compound, C13H12N2O5, is a key intermediate in the synthesis of mesogens, which are derivates of phenyloxadiazole. The oxadiazole and phenyl rings are planar to within 0.003 (2) and 0.010 (7) Å, respectively. The dihedral angle between the least-squares planes through the rings is 10.9 (1)°.
