The title com­pound, C37H42, is a new mesogenic com­pound containing the fluorene moiety. It exhibits enanti­otropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour with melting at 125 °C and isotropization at 175 °C. The crystallographically independent unit contains two mol­ecules oriented face-to-edge with respect to each other. The two mol­ecules have nearly the same conformation of the bis-phenyl fluorene moiety. The mol­ecular packing in the crystal phase is nematic-like.

Special details top

Geometry. All esds (except the esd in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account individually in the estimation of esds in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between esds in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell esds is used for estimating esds involving l.s. planes.

Refinement. Data were collected at 173 K on a Bruker–Nonius Kappa CCD diffractometer equipped with an Oxford Cryostream 700 apparatus. For the data collection, a single crystal was attached to the tip of a glass fiber with epoxy glue. Reduction of data and semiempirical absorption correction were done using SADABS program (Bruker-Nonius, 2002).

The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by the full-matrix least-squares method with anisotropic displacement parameters for non-H atoms.
