Two new mixed-valence iron phosphates, with crystal structures similar to that of the well known synthetic compound Fe7(PO4)6, have been synthesized hydro­thermally at 973 K and 0.1 GPa. The structures are characterized by edge-sharing Fe polyhedra forming chains parallel to the [101] direction. These chains are connected together by Fe3 octa­hedra and PO4 tetra­hedra. FeIII is located in the Fe1 and Fe2 octa­hedra. Fe3 occurs in a five-coordinated environment and is occupied by FeII, whereas the Fe4 octa­hedra are occupied by FeII and vacancies.

The title compound, Li0.97FeII0.79FeIII0.15(PO4), has been synthesized hydro­thermally at 973 K and 0.1 GPa. Its crystal structure is similar to that of natural triphylite and is characterized by two chains of edge-sharing octa­hedra parallel to the b axis. The M1 octa­hedra contain Li and vacancies, and the M2 octa­hedra contain FeII, FeIII and vacancies.

This paper reports the crystal structure of tetra­sodium diiron tris(phosphate), Na4Fe2+Fe3+(PO4)3, which has been synthesized hydro­thermally at 773 K and 0.1 GPa. The crystal structure has been refined in the space group R\overline{3}c and is identical to that of γ-NASICON. The heteropolyhedral framework is based on a regular alternation, in three dimensions, of corner-sharing PO4 tetra­hedra and FeO6 octa­hedra, constituting so-called `lantern units' stacked along the c axis. The Na+ cations are distributed over two crystallographic sites: the six-coordinated Na1 site which lies between two `lantern units', and the eight-coordinated Na2 site which lies at the same z value as the P site.

The title compound, diiron(II) phosphate hydroxide, Fe2(PO4)(OH), has been synthesized hydro­thermally and is the synthetic analogue of the mineral wolfeite. The crystal structure contains edge- and corner-sharing FeO4(OH) and FeO4(OH)2 polyhedra, linked via corner-sharing to the PO4 tetra­hedra.

The title compound, Na10(Na,Mn)7Mn43(PO4)36, has been synthesized hydro­thermally. Its crystal structure is similar to that of natural fillowite-type phosphates and can be described as a hexa­gonal packing of three types of rods parallel to the c axis, which show an alternation of Mn, Na and P sites and lattice vacancies.
